You may have heard people say, "We're made in God's image," but what does that actually mean?

Right at the beginning of the Bible, in Genesis 1:26-27, we're told that humanity was created in the image of God. It doesn't mean we physically look like God but instead, it means we were designed to reflect something of His character, heart and creativity to the world around us.

1. We Were Made for Relationship

God exists in perfect relationship, and we were created with that same desire for connection. We are made to know Him, walk with Him and experience meaningful relationships with others. From the very beginning, we were never designed to do life alone.

Every person carries value simply because they are made in God's image. Our worth isn't earned through success, appearance, productivity or achievement. It's something God lovingly gives us. This truth is the foundation for human dignity, equality and the way we're called to treat one another.

3. We Reflect God's Character

Being made in God's image means we were created to reflect aspects of who God is. Things like love, creativity, justice, compassion. We are designed to mirror His heart and represent Him in the world around us.

4. We Were Created to Create

Our God is a Creator, and part of bearing His image is expressing creativity ourselves. Whether it's through art, writing, music, building, designing, problem-solving or cultivating something new, creativity isn't just a talent for a select few. It's woven into who we are.

5. We Are Entrusted with Stewardship

In Genesis, being made in God's image is closely connected with caring for creation. We're invited to steward, protect and cultivate what God has made, reflecting His care and responsibility in the way we live.

Perhaps one simple way to summarise it is this:

'To be made in God's image means you were created to reflect God's goodness, represent Him in the world, and live with purpose and dignity.'
